Montserrat - "Then and Now"

This Video Blog is dedicated to those People who lost their life because of the volcano. My deepest sympathy to their surviving Family Members. To those People who have remained on the Island for their intestinal fortitude in their daily dealing with this volcano. Bravo.

Prior to 1995, Montserrat, a tiny mountainous and volcanic island nestled in the Eastern Caribbean was absolutely beautiful. There was some limited volcanic activity on the island in the form of hot sulfur springs.

In July 1995, rumbling were heard up in the Soufriere Hills. Within days, it was determined that the sleeping giant was waking up from its long sleep. Langs Soufriere on Paradise Ridge had erupted.

I have been traveling to Montserrat since 1969 and have accumulated many photographs and video tapes. Some video was captured on an old shoulder held VHS, some on a hand held HI-8 and finally on a Digital camera. Only the HI-8 and the Digital cameras had stabilization. However, the tapes shot without stabilization are far too valuable to throw away since some of the places shot are no longer in existence.

I will be posting clips and photographs of Montserrat that were shot prior to July 1995 and after July 1995. So, sit back and enjoy, all the clip, as I post them.

Montserrat - May 27 To June 3,2006

There appears to be a vast change in the Island since I was down five years ago. The dome of the volcano collapsed on May 19, 2006 sending pyroclastic flows of burning gas and rock fragments cascading down the mountain and Tar River Valley.
